Hilltopping on the Lassen Peak Trail 7-09-05

I was operating from the Lassen Peak Trail (approx. elevation 9500'). Lassen Peak is located in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Click here for a National Park Service map that shows the location of Lassen Volcanic NP relative to other parks in California. Lassen Park is located in the northern part of the state. Click here to see a topographic map of the Lassen Peak area.

We entered the park at the southern entrance, accessible off of Highway 36 out of Red Bluff.

This was my operating location along the Lassen Peak trail. We didn't make it to the top that day because we didn't feel comfortable crossing a snow field near the top (long way down if you slipped), so I strapped my telescoping mast to a signpost along the side of the trail and operated from there.

I'm pretty sure that is Lake Almanor in the distance just to the left of the mast. That would mean this picture was taken looking toward the southeast.

Here's the view of the Peak Trail parking lot from my operating location. I'm guessing we had hiked about 2 miles from the lot to get to this point.

Here's another view of the signpost that I used to support my telescoping mast. The peak can be seen in the background to the left of the post. Judging from this photo and the photo of the parking lot above, I think we might have been close to the 10,000' elevation. The parking lot is approx. 8,500' and the summit is approx. 10,500'.

The gusts were pretty strong that day, so I did what I could to shield the microphone from the wind noise.

That's me (N6TOP) with my Yaesu FT-817 around my neck. That's my backpack on the ground next to the post. I was carrying about 20 lbs. worth of equipment, food, water, etc.

I was able to make several contacts that day on 144.200 USB. The contacts were KC6ZWT (CM98 near Placerville), KD6VS (CM97 San Jose), K6XN (CM99 near Nevada City), K6NC (CM98 Echo Summit), and WB6VIV (CM87 Oakland).

I also made several contacts on 146.52 FM simplex with my Motorola Saber HT running 5 watts. The contacts included KC6ZWT (Norm near Placerville), N6UMQ (Curtis in San Jose), KE6DOA (Stephen in Shingletown), and KG6AMU (Rick near Eagle Lake).

Here's a view of the snow field on the side of the mountain.

Here's a shot towards the northeast. That's Prospect Peak (also in Lassen Park) on the left side of the picture. Several cone shaped peaks can be seen in this picture. The small hill in the center of the picture at the base of Prospect Peak is Cinder Cone. Click here to see a picture of Cinder Cone on another site.
