The Laney College Math Lab offers Technical Math with Algebra (220 ABCD), Technical Math with Geometry (220 EF) and Technical Math with Trigonometry (220 G) in a self-paced format. Each course is set up in half-unit modules (except 220 G which is one unit). To earn credit, you are expected to demonstrate that you have mastered the material for that module by passing a series of quizzes and tests. Each quiz covers specific sections of the assigned textbook, and each test covers the material from all the sections in that module.

What You Will Need:
For this course you will need:

  • A copy of the assigned textbook:
Mathematics for the Trades by Robert A. Carman
  • A scientific calculator

Quizzes and Tests:
How much time you spend preparing to take a quiz or a test is up to you. However, you must complete at least one module during the semester. Although we do not require you to do specific problems from the textbook, there is a required program of study to help you prepare to take the quizzes and tests.

Your goal in this course is to master the mathematics. To be sure you do that, we require you to score at least 90% (18 points out of 20) on each quiz before going on to the next section. If you score below 90% on a quiz, you must meet with your instructor to review the problems you missed. The instructor will suggest additional study before you attempt the quiz again. You may take the quiz up to 4 times if needed to attain the 90% mastery level.

If you score below 75% on the final exam you may retake it once after meeting with an instructor. A 10-point penalty is deducted from the second score on a retaken test. The higher of the two scores will be counted.

All quizzes and tests are closed-book exams. Open book and notes, studying, and talking are not permitted in the testing area. Unless it says otherwise on the test, use of a calculator is permitted.

Show your work on all quizzes and tests. The correct work and the correct answer are both required for full credit.

In general, any test you take will be graded by the next school day.

Grades:
Your grade in your Math Lab course is solely based on a weighted average of your scores on the quizzes and tests. The quizzes count for 50% of the grade and the tests count for 50% of the grade. Your letter grade will correspond to your numerical weighted average as follows:

    Weighted Average
    Grade
    90-100
    A
    80-89
    B
    70-79
    C
    60-69
    D
    Below 60
    F

Scores on tests for partially completed units will not be considered when computing the average for your grades.
