AMERICANA&ROOTS MUSIC
in (and around) LA

2007

We're taking some time to revamp our site, so if you're looking for calendar info, please check out the abbreviated calendar on our MySpace page: www.myspace.com/americanarootsla. In the meantime, the club directory and informational links below are still good. Hope you're enjoying a peaceful and musical holiday season. We look forward to having a renovated site here in the new year.

Hi, there —
We've officially entered the 21st century: we've got a MySpace page. Check it out at http://www.myspace.com/americanarootsla
We're still navigating our way through that freaky parallel universe but it's a start. If you know how to change info on the calendar on those pages, would you please give us a holler? We're still trying to figure that out...
On a far sadder note, we lost a vibrant member of our community last week, Amy Yessian, better known as "Mrs. Muffin." Now her husband, songwriter Jimmy Muffin, is dealing with his grief as well as truly staggering medical bills. If you would like to help, please scroll down to the What's Happening? section for details.

PLEASE NOTE: I try to verify info as much as possible but the amount of information coming in every day is staggering, and show dates, times and details are constantly changing. SO, DOUBLECHECK ALL SHOW DETAILS BEFORE making plans. Please.

Thanks for your interest in Americana/roots music happenings around Los Angeles; if at any time you wish to be added to or deleted from the email list, shoot us a line at info@americanarootsla.net

“Music is the best means we have of digesting time.” —W.H. Auden (1907-1973)

WHAT'S HAPPENING?
~R.I.P.~
Amy Yessian — aka "Mrs. Muffin," longtime supporter of LA songwriters & music scene — on 11/02, of cancer
Marijohn Wilkin — Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, gospel singer, co-author of "Long Black Veil" — on 10/28, in Nashville

~CONDOLENCES TO JIMMY MUFFIN...AND A WAY TO HELP~
The SoCal music community, especially the songwriter circle, lost a valuable member when Amy Yessian, aka "Mrs. Muffin," wife of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jimmy Muffin, lost a long battle with cancer on Nov. 2. Amy and Muffin have been devoted supporters of songwriters and the LA music scene for years. It's a huge loss, especially for Muffin. A celebration of Amy's life will be held eventually. In the meantime, Muffin's sister Elaine has respectfully asked that no flowers or mass cards be sent; what is honestly needed is financial assistance. Amy and Muffin's insurance was not enough to cover the overwhelming expense, and Muffin has been unable to work since earlier this year because he was taking care of Amy full time. Anyone wishing to help defray the staggering medical costs is gratefully asked to send donations to Jimmy Yessian, 5719 Beck Ave., North Hollywood, CA 91601.

~HAPPY TRAILS MOVES AND GROWS~
After 20 years, KXLU's Happy Trails radio show has moved to a new time slot: the third Wednesday of every month, still at midnight, but now running for two hours. The show continues to be overseen by producer Robert Douglas and host Jana Pendragon. Listen in at 88.9 FM or http://www.kxlu.com.
Also, Pendragon and Douglas are compiling archives of live recordings beyond Happy Trails or the station's Livation show. Artists who have a song or songs they'd like to donate can do so care of Pendragon, who says, "We are telling all of our guests to bring up any live CDs — cuts or full projects. Time for some more twang."

~AMERICANA/ROOTS ON LOCAL BOARDS~
Singer-songwriter Claire Holley wrote and recorded a handful of traditional-sounding songs for Arlene Hutton’s play See Rock City, which
runs through Nov. 18
at Crossley Theatre (1760 N. Gower, Hollywood). The recordings, which were produced by Holley and Don Heffington, feature Holley and LAmusicians Tom Corbett, Dominic Genova and Cliff Wagner. For info about the play, go to http://www.actorsco-op.org/.

~HINT: FREE HEALTH INSURANCE ADVICE FOR MUSICIANS FROM FUTURE OF MUSIC~
The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Future of Music Coalition has announced a health insurance "guidance program" for musicians called HINT, or Health Insurance Navigation Tool. Per FMC, "To assist the wellbeing of U.S.-based independent art and music curators, the HINT program will provide information at the FMC website and will also offer free phone consultations with experts to discuss affordable health coverage options available to artists and musicians." Details: http://www.futureofmusic.org/hint

~HOUSE CONCERTS~
There’s a pretty decent house concert circuit for singer-songwriters, Americana and world artists in Southern California. They offer intimate musical experiences and, not coincidentally, are more practical and rewarding for the artists on numerous levels. Here are some of the steadiest series:
Bodie House in Agoura Hills: http://www.bodiehouse.com
Live at the Bloomfield in North Hollywood: http://www.littlefriendmpg.com/latb/index.htm
Noble House Concerts in Van Nuys: http://www.jrp-graphics.com/noblehouse

~MONTHLY SHOWCASES TO CHECK OUT~
Whether you’re new in town, wanting to reconnect with old friends or just interested in learning more about the local Americana/roots-music scene, attending these showcases is a good way to familiarize yourself with what’s happening musically in Los Angeles.
* Sin City hosts at least one Friday (usually the last) and often a couple of other nights each month at the Mint in LA with three or four roots & rock bands: http://www.sincitysocialclub.com
* Grand Ole Echo hosts every Sunday night in spring and summer at the Echo in Echo Park: www.myspace.com/thegrandoleecho
* Town & Country Night happens one or two Tuesdays a month at El Cid in Hollywood, and is organized by the Happy Bookers, the gals behind the Grand Ole Echo: www.myspace.com/thehappybookers

* Ronnie Mack’s Barndance with the inimitable Ronnie Mack and his Barndance Band plus myriad guests — first Tuesday of every month at El Cid in Hollywood: http://www.electricearl.com/BDance.html
* BASC (Bluegrass Association of Southern California) Bluegrass Night with different bands performing each month -- third Tuesday of every month at Braemar Country Club-Grill Room in Tarzana: http://www.members.aol.com/intunenews

* Americana Music Circle -- monthly song swap for songwriters w/host Lauren Adams at Kulak's Woodshed in North Hollywood: http://www.americanacircle.com
* 29 Mules storm the stage and jam with various friends at Ireland's 32 Pub in Van Nuys for a rowdy rock 'n' tonk night every Wednesday: www.myspace.com/29mules

~NOTE TO AOL/NETSCAPE USERS~
As most of you with AOL and Netscape accounts already know, we have difficulties getting updates to you via email because AOL/Netscape too often mistakes them for spam and bounces them back, even though everyone on the email list requests to be added to it. Sincere thanks to the folks who've taken the time to complain to AOL -- it's made a difference. But AOL has gone back to bouncing emails, more often than not. In the interest of avoiding any more hassles, PLEASE, if you have any other, non-AOL accounts at your disposal that can accept large text emails, use those instead. Thanks.
