Howard L. Busby
February 24, 1925 – May 5, 2001
Howard was born in Dallas, Texas. After his graduation from Woodrow Wilson High School, he attended Southern Methodist University for a year, then completed his BBA degree at Tulane University, his MBA at Harvard Business School, and his JD from SMU Law School.
He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Supply Corp officer. His service time included his schooling at Tulane and his first year at Harvard Business School, duty at the Navy Finance Center at Cleveland, Ohio, and a tour as Supply and Disbursing Officer aboard the USS General Haan APA-158, a transport ship in the Pacific Fleet. He was Honorably Discharged as an Ensign, SC USNR.
In his professional career he was an attorney, limiting his practice to estate, tax, corporate law, and accounting services. He was active in his professional associations, in Kiwanis, and in Toastmasters. Many of his clients had been with him for thirty to forty-five years, and were “family” to him and to his employees. He was actively involved in his business until he fell and was injured in April. His staff was also his family: Sharron McCormick, who was with Howard for thirty-three years, Susan Edwards, who was with him for six years, and Chris King, CPA, who was with him as an employee for several years and had returned to work with the firm.
He had a ministry to the widows of several of his long-time clients, taking care of them, visiting with them, sometimes picking up groceries and medicines for them, and generally being a loving and attentive son to them until their deaths, in addition to taking care of their business affairs.
He loved his Lord, serving as song director for churches and Sunday School classes. An accomplished trombonist, he was active in ministry during his Navy days. He sang and played his horn with a radio ministry in New Orleans while he was at Tulane, and was active in Youth for Christ in New Orleans and in Boston, as well as in Dallas after he returned home from the Navy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris, his two sons, Gerald and Douglas, his sister, Dorothy Hatfield, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
