What Does a Data Architect Do?

Specifically, our services will guide you through data architecture planning and implementation. It is more than data modeling, meta-data administration, data stewardship, data warehousing or database administration. A data architect will:

• Assist Senior Management in translating its vision, mission statement and business strategy into a set of agreed-upon architectural principles, using approaches appropriate to the corporate culture.
• Be responsible for envisioning, defining, and managing the future Enterprise Data Architecture, in concert with the future vision which defines the framework to achieve a highly managed data environment. Document the proposed data architecture environment in order to produce and maintain an accurate "to be" view of the data environment. Ensure that the Data Architecture is revisited and updated as business develops.
• Design the implementation plan based on organization culture, growth strategy, project activities and resource and organizational structures. Create best practices, centers of excellence, marketing and education services, and portfolio management within data architecture team environment.
• Coordinate and participate in activities related to the conceptualization, design, specification, documentation, and implementation of the enterprise's data architecture including creating, maintaining and enhancing the overall data architecture across all initiatives. Establish and maintain the strategic data architecture at a system/subsystem level based on a continuing dialog with business and technology groups within the organization.
• Be responsible for defining, implementing and enforcing data management standards, and assist in guiding data modelers in their collaborative efforts with application development team members regarding data implementations. Provide data management stewardship to the Data Modelers and Application Teams-- including data acquisition, modeling, integration, distribution, storage, and usage.
• Ensure communication is conducted in a way that facilitates the creation of a team environment and encourages staff to view the architecture group as a valuable resource and partner, while ensuring that data architecture guidelines are adhered to.
• Establish, participate, and maintain relationships with business and technology groups within the organization to remain appraised of project status and direction, architectural and technology issues, risks, functional and integration issues, etc.
• Provide guidance to the development and support of corporate application database. Coordinates efforts with Data Framework, Business, and Application Team Leadership for strategic direction on data management.
• Participate with the business partners to ensure initiatives are implemented to promote enterprise wide value rather than departmental.
• Assist Program and Project Team's Technical leadership to ensure agreed-upon architectural goals are factored into each designated program and project.
• Ensure Data Quality throughout the Enterprise; design, construct and implement management programs to ensure the quality and usefulness of all data assets, include data stewardship.
• Develop and maintain active relationships with research partners, systems and technology vendors, industry and trade groups to ensure that the Enterprise and its personnel are aware of current and future database trends and capabilities.
