2008-2009 ICS School Calendar

The School Calendar for 2008 - 2009 has been published.

Principal's Place: (reprinted from current ICS Newsletter)

Dear ICS Families:

THANK YOU PTC!

The final PTC meeting for the 2007-2008 school year will be held Tuesday, May 13 at 4:00p. This will also be the final meeting for all four of our PTC board members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank President Donna Tworek, Vice President Nikki Wijas, Secretary Laura Mendoza and Treasurer Prashant Mehta for their dedication, hard work and time spent for our students and faculty. The PTC has had a very successful year. It was not uncommon for more than 25 parents to participate in a monthly meeting. Systems and structures have been established for future boards and meetings. The positive spirit our board brought to the PTC is growing rapidly throughout our parent population. I am excited for the future of this fine and supportive organization.

STUDENT PLACEMENT

Teacher teams will be meeting this month to place students in homerooms for the 2008-2009 school year. If you have any information that will help teams make a great decision for your child, please forward it to me in writing by Friday, May 16. Please do not request a specific teacher.

Please email icsptc@gmail.com if you would like to join the Parent Teacher Council mass email list.

If you would like to contact me, please feel free to email me or call 847-824-1340.

11th Annual Cystic Fibrosis Mini-Walk

Iroquois Community School will hold the 11th Annual Samantha Lehman Cystic Fibrosis walk. The Iroquois Student Government established this event to support Sam, then an ICS student, who is afflicted with this disease. We are trying to help the Greater Chicago Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raise funds for research, medical treatment, and education. You can be a big part of this success by walking with us and getting others to support your walk with pledge donations.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. People with CF suffer from chronic and often fatal lung infections and have trouble digesting food. Twenty years ago, a child with CF was not expected to live much beyond the age of 12. Today, the median age of survival for a person with CF is 34 years. Although research is making tremendous progress, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation needs people like us to increase the survival rate or even find a cure for this devastating disease. Check out the information on the next two pages and help us make “great strides” toward a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Size of our World

Have you ever wondered just how big the Earth is compared to other celestial planets? You might be surprised.

ICS Name Tag Reminder

In our school community, every student and staff member will wear a nametag identifying themselves as a member of the ICS community. In addition, visitors will also be required to wear a nametag. The purpose of our nametag is to ensure safety and a sense of community among us, as we greet each other by name.

Nametags should remain in the school building at all times, and should be worn the entire school day, except for gym and recess.

All students will be issued a nametag and lanyard free of charge at the beginning of each school year. Replacement nametags can be purchased in the office for a fee of $3.00. No temporary IDs will be issued.

Middle school students in need of community ID's can purchase an extra ID in the office for the same fee.

Traffic Safety Reminder

Traffic concerns around ICS, especially on Birch (east of the school, next to Evans), are arising again this year. Student safety is the main priority for all of us in the ICS community.

Please DO NOT:

Double Park

Park in the drop off zone

Pass buses in the school drive

Home construction on Birch is limiting parking on this street. Please use the parking lot north of the building for drop off. Requests are being sent to the Des Plaines Police Department to monitor the situation and issue tickets as necessary.

ICS Parent/Teacher Council Explores Recycling Program

The ICS PTC is reviewing the “Paper Retriever” recycling program. The program would provide a drop box on school property that could be used for all paper products—newspapers, magazines, office papers, school papers, catalogs, mail, etc. Items would be picked up and a small fee would be earned by the ICS PTC to help with annual fund raising efforts. Watch for more news on this project in future newsletters.

Go to Paperretriever.com to learn more.
